    Nature of Work 
    The City of Grand Rapids is accepting applications for upcoming engineering internships. These internships will be located with the Engineering, Water and Mobile GR Traffic Safety Departments and will focus on various types of project work under the direction of Project Managers or Project Engineers. 

    This is a wonderful opportunity to be a civil engineer working for the second largest City in Michigan. Engineers at the City of Grand Rapids work to execute projects that benefit the public and support the City’s vibrant dynamic growth. This is an opportunity to be mentored by senior staff and gain an understanding design and construction in a dense urban environment.   

    Examples of Intern Projects: 

    Inspect construction projects under the direction of a senior field inspector including quality control, unit take offs, and inspection daily reports.  

    Review plans and designs for water mains, traffic safety, and street improvements. Learning City standards and best engineering practices.  

    Participate in Facilities’ projects including design review and construction inspection.  

    Work in AutoCAD and review existing CAD drawings.

    Use or edit GIS layers to communicate with other departments and maintain record drawings.  

    Summarize data, create and manage documents, and prepare reports for review by senior staff. 

    Assist with additional projects as needed 



    Hours 
    Normal business hours are 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. If construction inspection is being performed, then work hours may shift as needed. Work hours are flexible to accommodate school schedules as needed. Expectation is 30-40 hours per week for summer 2025 with the possibility of extension and 12-18 hours per week during the school year, not to exceed one year without reapplying.

    Minimum Training and Experience
    Minimum Training and Experience 

    Must be a current student at an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in engineering. 

    --AND--

    Must be familiar with Microsoft products including Word and Excel.
