Join MEDC’s Alyssa Tracey, Director of International Trade, for a discussion on opportunities for Michigan companies in Hong Kong with Bridget Lee, Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council Chicago Office.
The United States is a major trading partner to Hong Kong, with over $30 billion in exported goods to Hong Kong in 2019, much of which was transshipped to mainland China and other regional markets. Michigan’s bilateral trading relationship with Hong Kong surpassed $325 million in 2019, making it an important destination for Michigan goods. Top export categories from the U.S. to Hong Kong include electrical and general machinery, precious metal and stone, art and antiques, and agricultural products.
In addition to manufacturing inputs, Hong Kong is a dynamic export market for U.S. agricultural and consumer products. In 2019, Hong Kong was the 9th largest market for U.S. food and agricultural exports and ranked 6th for U.S. consumer-oriented exports. Hong Kong consumers are willing and able to pay for higher-quality goods, which makes it a prime target for Michigan exporters considering expanding into Asian markets.
