Nature of Work
The purpose of this job is to perform skilled carpentry duties in the construction and maintenance of City buildings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Builds and repairs cabinets, desks, tables and other articles of furniture; lays out outline and dimension on lumber stock; builds and repairs ladders; builds and repairs wood bodies on trucks; fits and replaces ornamental cornices; constructs display cases
Operates woodworking machines, including band saw, planer, jointer, wood lathes, drill presses and other machines to cut and shape parts from stock; uses and keeps in good condition cabinet maker tools
Alters, repairs and maintains buildings, doors, windows and partitions
Fits and hangs doors and fits window sashes; installs miscellaneous hardware
Estimates material, labor and time costs, requisitions materials
Performs general maintenance, including construction, landscaping, winterization and plumbing
Designs and constructs park signs; performs maintenance and repair of signs, as needed
Assists with snow and ice plowing, salting and removal
Performs related work as required
Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience
High School Diploma (or GED)
--AND--
Four (4) years of experience in carpentry
--OR--
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
Certified Pool Operator
Confined space training
Aerial Platform
Backhoe/forklift certifications
Other Necessary Qualifications
Knowledge of:
The standard methods, equipment, materials, tools and practices of the carpentry trade
The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
Pool and splash pad infrastructures
Park irrigation infrastructure and basic plumbing
General maintenance procedures and practices
Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
Skill in:
The use of standard tools and equipment of the carpentry and woodworking trade
Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
Ability to:
Interpret and work from penciled sketches, drawings, plans and blueprints
Make material and labor estimates
Operate applicable machinery and tools
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Meet schedules and deadlines of the work
Understand and carry out oral and written directions
